Custom Surfboard Design

Category: Product / Industrial Design
Role: Lead Designer
Tools: CAD · Hand Shaping · Prototyping · User Feedback
Timeline: 4 Weeks
Status: Final Production Board

Overview

This project focused on designing and producing a custom surfboard optimized for specific wave conditions and rider preferences. The goal was to translate rider feedback into a refined board shape that balanced performance, feel, and aesthetic identity.

Problem

Surfers often struggle to find boards that match:

  • Their exact skill level

  • Local wave conditions

  • Preferred ride style

  • Personal aesthetic preferences

Off-the-rack boards frequently require compromise, leading to reduced performance and satisfaction.

Users

Primary users:

  • Intermediate to advanced surfers

  • Riders with specific wave condition needs

  • Surfers looking for personalized performance and feel

Key needs:

  • Predictable performance

  • Responsiveness in local waves

  • Confidence in equipment

  • Personal connection to the board

Research

Research methods included:

  • Rider interviews about past boards and performance issues

  • Observation of surf sessions and conditions

  • Review of comparable board shapes and rocker profiles

  • Analysis of rider stance, weight, and style

Insights:

  • Small dimensional changes significantly affect feel

  • Local wave shape strongly impacts optimal rocker and rails

  • Riders value trust and communication in custom builds

Design Goals

  • Optimize for local wave profile

  • Improve paddling efficiency

  • Maintain control in steeper sections

  • Create a board that feels intuitive to the rider

  • Reflect brand identity in aesthetic finish

Ideation & Sketching

  • Multiple outline and rocker variations explored

  • Rail profiles sketched and compared

  • Fin placement iterations tested

  • Volume distribution adjusted for rider stance

Prototyping

  • Hand-shaped prototype

  • CAD-assisted refinement

  • Multiple fin setups tested

  • Material selection tested for flex and durability

User Testing

  • Rider tested board across multiple sessions

  • Feedback collected on speed, control, and paddling

  • Iterative tuning based on ride feedback

Changes made:

  • Adjusted rail thickness

  • Modified tail width

  • Fine-tuned fin placement

Final Design

The final board delivered:

  • Improved paddling efficiency

  • Increased speed down the line

  • More predictable turning

  • Strong rider confidence and satisfaction

Results & Outcomes

  • Positive rider feedback and repeat orders

  • Refined shaping process for future customs

  • Established performance benchmarks for similar builds
